There are a dozen named spots around the three islands, and four worth planning your morning around. Here is what is at each one, how deep it sits, and the hour that changes everything.
The turtle feeding grounds
Shallow seagrass beds just off the islands, where green and hawksbill turtles graze and come up to breathe. Three to six metres of water, calm, and you float still while they come to you rather than chasing them.
Best in the morning, when the water is clearest and the surface is flat. Where exactly depends on the tide and the hour, which is most of what a guide is actually for.

The underwater statues off Gili Meno
Forty-eight human figures in a circle on white sand, about a hundred metres off the west coast of Gili Meno, three to six metres down. Placed there in 2017 and now covered in soft coral, with fish living between the bodies.
Best between eight and eleven, before the wind gets up and before the day boats arrive together. The full page about them is here, including how to get the photograph.
The coral gardens
Stretches of hard and soft coral on the reef slopes, busy with parrotfish, sergeant majors and butterflyfish. Shallow enough that a mask and a life jacket are all you need, and the spot where most people forget to check the time.
The reef here has suffered like reefs everywhere, which is why the fins-up rule matters: one careless kick breaks what took years to grow.
The turtle hatchery stop
Not a snorkeling spot, but the stop people remember. A local project raises hatchlings until they are strong enough for the open sea. More about it here.
The one rule that changes everything
Go early. The sea is flattest and clearest in the first hours of the day, the light reaches the sand, and the boats have not arrived yet. By midday the surface chops up and visibility drops. Every spot on this page is a different place at nine in the morning than at two in the afternoon.
Questions people ask
Can I reach these spots from the beach? +
Some of them. The statues are a swim from Gili Meno, and parts of the reef sit close to shore. The current between the islands is the reason most people go by boat.
Do I need to dive to see any of this? +
No. Everything on this page sits between three and six metres down, which you see clearly from the surface with a mask.
How many spots do you visit in one trip? +
Three or four, chosen in the morning once I can see what the sea and the current are doing. The order changes, the spots rarely do.
