Three islands, three tempos. They sit twenty minutes apart by boat and you can see all of them in a day, so the only real question is where you sleep at night — and each one does that its own way.
Gili Trawangan: the lively one
The biggest of the three and the one that stays up late. Most of the places to stay and eat, the dive shops, the night market, music on the beach after dinner. And because the island is big enough, it gives you both sides of itself: the harbour strip hums, while the north and west coasts stay quiet and hold the best sunsets.
It suits you if you want choice and company, somewhere to go in the evening, or you are travelling alone and would rather not eat alone.
Gili Meno: the calm one
The smallest and the gentlest. A salt lake in the middle, a turtle hatchery, the underwater statues off the west coast, and long stretches of sand with nobody on them. Evenings are early and quiet here, and that is exactly what people come for.
It suits you if you are a couple, or you want four days of swimming, reading and watching the light change.
Gili Air: right in between
Exactly in the middle of the other two: enough cafes, warungs and small bars to feel alive, slow enough to sleep properly. Good food, easy walking, small guesthouses, and the shortest crossing from Lombok. It is the island most people say they would pick again.
It suits you if you want a bit of both, or you simply cannot choose — and that is a perfectly good reason.

What is the same everywhere
No cars and no motorbikes on any of the three. You walk, you cycle, or you take a cidomo, the small horse cart. Walking right around Gili Air or Gili Meno takes about an hour and a half, Trawangan a little more.
The snorkeling is the same water for all three. Turtles feed on the seagrass beds off every island, and the boats work the whole archipelago whichever island you sleep on. The shared trip covers the turtles, the statues and a coral garden in about four and a half hours.
If you only have two nights
Stay on Gili Air, do the snorkeling trip on the full day, and walk around the island at sunset. You will have seen the best of all three islands without spending half your time on boats.
Questions people ask
Can I visit the other islands during my stay? +
Yes, easily. There are public boats between the three islands, and every snorkeling trip stops at more than one. Twenty minutes of water, no more.
Which island is best for families? +
Gili Air, usually: short walks, calm water close to shore, and enough places to eat that nobody goes hungry at eight in the evening. Gili Meno works beautifully too if your children are happy with sand and sea all day.
Which island has the underwater statues? +
Gili Meno, about a hundred metres off its west coast. You do not need to stay there to see them: every snorkeling trip stops at them.
